In a recent event held in Wakiso, female student leaders were advised to maintain humility and not be overly consumed by the privileges of their positions as they transition into the real world after their academic journey. Dr. Noeline Kirabo, the founder and executive director of Kyusa, an organization that mentors women leaders, emphasized the need for student leaders to understand that their authority remains within the school’s confines.

During the inaugural conference for female student leaders, organized by the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) through their Wakiso District Secretariat and held at the Wakissha Resource Centre in Wakiso District, Dr. Kirabo spoke to over 900 female prefects and student leaders from various academic institutions in the district.

The event garnered the participation of several entities, including the Uganda Aids Commission, National Resistance Movement (NRM) Office of the National Chairperson, and others. A key attraction of the conference was the musical performances by the trio Aisha, Mary, and Peace from SOAR AWAY, who captivated their fellow students with thrilling musical acts.

Megga Nalutaaya, the executive director of SOAR AWAY, delivered a message of inspiration, encouraging the young leaders to dream big and make their mark not only in Uganda but throughout Africa. She also entertained the audience with her musical interludes, keeping the teenagers engaged and entertained throughout the event.

Abius Bakabashaba, UNSA’s coordinator for Wakiso district, highlighted the partnership with SOAR AWAY in making the conference a reality. Dr. Stephen Asiimwe, an HIV prevention officer representing the Uganda Aids Commission, delivered a candid sermon on avoiding distractions that can lead to HIV and AIDS.

Gift Nakato, a 19-year-old district student leader, who served as the outgoing chairperson for Wakiso District, was another notable speaker. The event featured engaging debates, panel discussions, and musical performances, creating an environment of active participation and learning.

The conference was attended by students from various institutions, including Comprehensive S.S Serinya Wakiso, Wampeewo Ntakke S.S, Standard High Zzana, Our Lady of Good Counsel, St. Charles High School Buloba, Exodus College Wakiso, Airforce Army School Entebbe, Greenlight Islamic School Nansana, St Charles Lwanga International, Nansana S.S, Nampunge Community, Ebenezer Christian High School, Kisubi High School, Bright College Nansana, Qamar High School, Lubiri High Buloba Campus, St. George High School Kasengejje, and the Wakiso Secondary School Head Teachers Association.

This conference served as a valuable platform for student leaders to gain insights into life beyond their school years and the responsibilities that come with it. The speakers provided guidance and motivation, encouraging the young leaders to aspire to make a positive impact on a broader scale as they step into the world beyond the school gate.
