Mayor of Entebbe, Fabrice Brad Rulinda, expressed dissatisfaction with the impact of elections on Africa, noting that the continent has not witnessed the anticipated positive outcomes. He emphasized that Africa has often imitated Western democratic models without adopting systems conducive to its growth and development.

Rulinda conveyed these sentiments in Abuja ahead of this year’s colloquium organized by the Haske Satumari Foundation. The colloquium aims to initiate discussions on electoral and judicial reforms.

As a special guest at the event themed “Electoral And Judicial Reforms: The Imperatives on Nigeria’s Democracy, Governance, Leadership, and its selection processes,” Rulinda will be joined by Nigerian leaders including former President Goodluck Jonathan, Governor of Plateau State, Barr Caleb Mutfwang, Human Rights activist and renowned lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana SAN, former Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, among others on Thursday.

Rulinda criticized the prevailing electoral processes in Africa, highlighting that elections often revolve around bribery and financial inducements rather than genuine democratic principles. He called for electoral reforms and a change in the mindset of politicians.

The Mayor questioned the electorate’s understanding of democracy, noting that politicians exploit voters by distributing money during campaigns, only to neglect their responsibilities post-election. He emphasized the need for a redefinition of democracy, suggesting that democratic values should begin at the grassroots level within families and homes.

Furthermore, Rulinda criticized the lack of cooperation among politicians, stressing the importance of collaboration for national development. He emphasized the significance of honest dialogue, such as the forthcoming Haske Kudla Foundation Colloquium, in shaping Africa’s democratic future.

Rulinda urged Africans to prioritize the development of democracy, advocating for the elimination of divisive factors like tribalism, ethnicity, and religion. He criticized African politicians for their self-serving tendencies, highlighting the importance of leadership focused on serving the people rather than personal gain.

In a notable proposal, Rulinda suggested that Abuja should not have an elected mayor, arguing that appointed leaders might prioritize development over electoral concerns. He emphasized the need for politicians to prioritize governance for the collective welfare of the populace.

Rulinda emphasized the necessity of intentional efforts to develop democracy in Africa, stressing the importance of collective action and responsible leadership in achieving this goal.
