(Kampala) – A recent statement by Apostle Grace Lubega, a religious leader, has sparked debate over the upcoming Nyege Nyege festival in Jinja City, scheduled for November 14 to 17. Lubega called for the festival’s removal from the city, citing concerns over immorality. However, local officials have expressed their support for the event, emphasizing its economic benefits and cultural significance.
Apostle Lubega made his comments during a crusade in Jinja, declaring that “Nyege Nyege needs to be kicked out of Jinja.” He argued that the festival promotes ungodliness, stating, “a time has come when people will try to enter the gates of Jinja city with Nyege Nyege, but the spiritual environment won’t allow them in.”
In response, Sarah Babyerabira, the Senior Commercial Officer of Jinja City, defended the festival at a press conference held at Talent Africa offices in Kololo. She highlighted the economic advantages brought by the festival, saying, “Labeling it an immoral event would be really farfetched. The advantages of this festival to us as a city outweigh any negatives that might be mentioned at large.” She reaffirmed the city’s commitment to supporting the festival and expressed enthusiasm for its upcoming activities.
Another local religious leader, Bernard Mukama, dismissed the claims of immorality associated with Nyege Nyege as “baseless and lack biblical evidence.” He urged the organizers to consider better ways to present the festival to avoid misunderstandings, particularly regarding its name.
This year’s Nyege Nyege festival will introduce a new daytime program called “Nyege In The City,” which aims to enhance the overall experience with guided tours, fine dining, water-based activities on the Nile, and cultural events. Derek Debru, the CEO of Nyege Nyege, mentioned that these activities will lead up to the main festival, which will occur in the evening. The main grounds will be closed from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM for security checks to ensure the safety of attendees.
The festival will feature a diverse lineup of performances, taking place at the Jinja Golf Course, and will include seven stages themed around Afrogalactic culture. Notable acts will include local artists such as Hozambe and Zex Bilangilangi, as well as international performers like Cali P from Jamaica and several others from around the globe.
