In an effort to restore wetlands and conserve the environment, the Kisoro district Environment Officer, Akankwasa Unice, has embarked on profiling the inlet streams and adjacent users of the Nyarutovu wetland.

Nyarutovu wetland inlet stream users are primarily from the two villages of Rusanze and Rurembo in Nyundo Subcounty in Bukimbiri County, Kisoro district. While some have planted maize, sweet potatoes, yams, cabbages, green peppers, soya beans, and beans, others have resorted to planting different tree species, which may negatively impact the water catchment of Lake Mutanda.

The Wetland Restoration and Conservation project is a countrywide initiative funded by the Green Climate Fund. In 2024, the major emphasis in Kisoro district is on restoring Nyarutovu, Gichuba wetlands, and the Rushaga and Kanyamahene hills.

The Kisoro district Environment Officer, Akankwasa Eunice, urged the inlet stream users to cooperate and collaborate with the district environment office in profiling the inlet streams as a way of conserving, restoring, and protecting the water catchment areas in Kisoro district.

Akankwasa further advised the beneficiaries to embrace the activity by providing their particulars to the responsible authorities at the Subcounty level in order to receive strategic alternative livelihoods from the Wetland Restoration and Conservation Project as a way of improving their standards of living.
