Kabale, Uganda – The final farewell was given today to Ruth Mutana Keishemera, a respected 98-year-old mother of seven and grandmother to prominent journalist Sophan Niwamanya. She was laid to rest at her ancestral home in Katuna Town Council, Kabale District.
A moving funeral service was held at St. Peter’s Karujanga Church of Uganda, drawing a large gathering of mourners, including local leaders and members of the media.
Mourners heard heartfelt tributes from her children, who fondly remembered her as a loving and unifying figure within the family. They also emphasized her dedication to promoting good sanitation and personal hygiene. Her grandchildren echoed these sentiments, highlighting her strong belief in the importance of education.
During the service, Nelson Nshangabasheija, the LC5 Chairperson of Kabale District, addressed the community, urging them to reject violence and division as the upcoming elections approach.
Rev. Kahwera Jackson of St. Peter’s Karujanga Church of Uganda commended the family for their devoted care of Ruth Mutana Keishemera in her final years. In his sermon, he strongly condemned violence, witchcraft, and disrespect within marriages, advocating for love, unity, and forgiveness among Christians.
The Reverend also voiced concerns about the issue of abductions in the country, drawing parallels to the practices of past regimes. He concluded his message by urging Christians to prepare for the afterlife and prioritize their spiritual well-being.
Ruth Mutana Keishemera leaves behind a large and loving family, including five of her seven children, 37 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Her memory will live on as a pillar of unity and love within her family and the wider community. According to her children, while she had been suffering from ulcers, the suspected cause of her death was cancer.
