North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, has issued a statement concerning a fire outbreak at Ngetta Mission, Lira City East Division, Lira City. According to SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the fire brigade and rescue services attached to the North Kyoga region responded and extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to other rooms.
It is alleged that an alarm, caused by fire, was reported on a permanent building containing approximately nine (9) rooms that belong to the Catholic Diocese of Lira, used as a residence for the Nuns. Upon receiving this information, our fire team quickly responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. However, only one room was damaged, resulting in the loss of all items in the room, including money. At least 5 million Shs, intended for buying food items and paying workers, were burnt in the fire incident.
The value of other items is yet to be established by the management of Ngetta Catholic Mission. Nevertheless, the cause of the fire is under investigation by North Kyoga Police, though preliminary findings indicate a short circuit. Police appreciate the timely reporting by the management of Ngetta Mission, as well as the quick response by the police fire team.
This incident marks the 3rd fire within North Kyoga in a one-week period. Police remind the public that it is already the dry season, urging them to observe the weather carefully and report any incidents promptly for a quick response.
