Five people died on the spot, and four others were seriously injured following a motor accident along the Rukungiri-Kanungu road in Kanungu district.
The accident happened on Saturday evening at around 5:00 PM at Nyakashure in Nyamirama sub-county. It occurred when the yet-to-be-identified driver of the trailer with Rwandan registration number RAD 940J/RL 1455, which was heading to Kihihi town from Rukungiri, drove on the right side of the road instead of keeping left.
As a result, it collided with an Isuzu ELF tipper registration number UAW 904R that was in its lane heading to Rukungiri from Kihihi.
Four people who were in the tipper, namely Fred Byamukama (the driver), Reagan Akandwanaho, Thereza Kyarisima, and Genario Tumuramye, all residents of Kinanira village, Burora parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county, Rukungiri district, died on the spot. A fifth person, who has not been identified, died at Kihihi HC4 in Kihihi town.
Four other casualties, whose particulars are not yet known, are admitted at Kihihi HC4 receiving treatment. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the same health center mortuary for postmortem.
Elly Maate, police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, confirmed the accident. He said the trailer driver fled the scene after the accident and was driving in the wrong lane. The case is registered at Kanungu police station under file number TAR: 16/2024.
