The government has announced that Gomba district will be the venue for this year’s Heroes Day celebrations. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, made this announcement while speaking to journalists at the Uganda Media Centre on Wednesday. The event will be held at Kasooli in Mpenja sub-county on Sunday, June 9, 2024.

Dr. Baryomunsi explained that the decision to host the celebrations in Gomba was made during the weekly Cabinet meeting, which was chaired by President Yoweri Museveni at State House Entebbe on Monday, May 13, 2024. The Ministry of the Presidency presented an information paper about the celebration, which was unanimously approved during the meeting.

In addition to the Heroes Day preparations, the Cabinet discussed other significant issues, including the Early Childhood Development (ECD) policy and the upcoming Mass Enrolment and Renewal of national identity cards.

The Heroes Day celebration is a key event that commemorates the sacrifices of the first NRM/A heroes who were executed in Kikandwa, Luweero district, by the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA) in 1981. This area was significant in the five-year guerrilla war that led to President Museveni’s rise to power. The day serves as a reminder to current and future generations of the importance of courage, resilience, and service to the nation.

Minister Baryomunsi mentioned that more details about the preparations for the event would be provided later by the presidency minister, Milly Babalanda, and other officers in charge. He expressed hope that many Ugandans would attend and participate in this important event that reflects on the country’s history.

Last year’s Heroes Day event took place at Kasaala playground in Butuntumula sub-county, Luweero district, under the theme “Arise Uganda: Our Heroes’ Sacrifices Now Bear Fruits.” This year’s celebrations in Gomba aim to continue honoring the legacy of Uganda’s heroes and inspire the nation to value bravery and dedication.

Heroes Day is celebrated every June 9 and is a national holiday that acknowledges the contributions and sacrifices of those who fought for the nation’s freedom and development. The government encourages all citizens to join in the celebrations and remember the heroes who have shaped Uganda’s history.
