The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Sentamu, has confirmed to the people of Obongi District that the NRM government will soon provide them with electricity. Dr. Nankabirwa was speaking at the commissioning of the 132 kV electricity transmission line connecting West Nile to the national grid.
She said that now that West Nile has been connected to the national grid, the government will put a lot of effort into extending power to Obongi. Hon. Nankabirwa mentioned that she had been approached by Obongi leaders regarding the issue of electricity being extended to the district.
Speaking before President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who was the chief guest at the commissioning ceremony, Hon. Nankabirwa reiterated the NRM government’s commitment to connecting the entire country to electricity. Obongi District is currently the only district in West Nile without any electricity poles and without proper power.
After the commissioning ceremony, Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa met the RDC of Obongi, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, and the district chairperson of Obongi, Abib Buga Khemis Awadi, and reassured them of the government’s commitment to extending electricity to Obongi District.
On April 13, 2023, when President Museveni visited Obongi District, he pledged to extend electricity to Obongi District.
