On July 1st, AGORA extended a bold invitation to President Museveni through his office for an X Space Conversation focused on tackling corruption. This digital forum aims to provide the President with an opportunity to engage directly with citizens in a virtual town hall setting, highlighting his commitment to combating the persistent issue that continues to afflict his administration.

AGORA, a Ugandan civic organization renowned for sparking discussions on democracy, human rights, and political accountability through social media campaigns and X (formerly Twitter) Spaces, seized upon a recent declaration by President Museveni on June 24th. In his message, the President declared an all-out war on corruption, denouncing it as the “thief of government money” and calling upon all patriots and victims to unite against this national scourge.

AGORA Invites Museveni to Discuss Corruption on X Spaces

This isn’t the first time President Museveni has raised the battle cry against corruption. Over the years, he has likened it to a “cancer” eating away at Uganda’s development prospects. His early efforts to combat corruption under the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Ten Point Programme, where it featured prominently as point seven, underscore his longstanding recognition of its devastating impact.

AGORA acknowledged and and says it supports the President’s stance against corruption, harking back to his pre-presidential days when he already foresaw its detrimental effects. As a citizens-led initiative, AGORA says it values the role of ordinary Ugandans in the fight against corruption, a sentiment echoed by President Museveni himself.

Therefore, AGORA respectfully invited the President Museveni to participate in an X Space discussion on corruption at his convenience in July 2024. They proposed a structured format with moderated questions followed by an interactive session with a live audience. The organization expressed readiness to accommodate the President’s schedule.

AGORA is now awaiting President Museveni’s response, hopeful for his continued engagement in this pivotal discussion that concerns every Ugandan citizen.
