The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has initiated a nationwide mobile registration campaign aimed at registering Ugandans who do not yet have National IDs. This campaign is designed to bring the registration process closer to citizens by offering services at the sub-county level.

The move comes as part of NIRA’s responsibility under the Registration of Persons Act Cap 332, which mandates the authority to ensure that all Ugandan citizens are registered. By extending the registration services across the country, NIRA aims to reduce barriers to access and ensure that every eligible citizen has the opportunity to obtain a National ID.

Osborn Mushabe, NIRA’s Manager for Public Relations and Corporate Affairs, announced the launch of the mobile registration initiative through X (formerly known as Twitter). In his statement, he encouraged all unregistered Ugandans to take advantage of the services being brought directly to their communities.

The mobile registration drive will run until November 23, 2024. During this period, Local Council 1 (LC1) chairpersons will be responsible for informing residents about the specific dates when the mobile registration teams will be present in their areas. This decentralized approach is intended to ensure that even those in remote areas have access to the registration services without having to travel long distances.

For citizens seeking additional information, NIRA advises them to contact their respective LC1 chairpersons or visit the nearest NIRA office for further details. The authority hopes that this campaign will significantly increase the number of registered citizens, ensuring that more Ugandans can access services that require National ID verification.
