Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) Aims to Eradicate Potholes by the end of the Year

The top leadership of Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) discussed their commitment to eliminating all potholes in the city by the year 2024 in a recent meeting held at City Hall, . The announcement was made by KCCA Executive Director, Dorothy Kisaka, during a media address where she outlined the organization’s vision for a pothole-free Kampala.

“We are determined to say goodbye to the relentless presence of potholes in 2024 and transform it into a song of the past,” stated Kisaka.

The city has been undergoing extensive road construction funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) through the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCCRP). The initiative aims to fix over 40 roads within a three-year timeframe and put an end to the longstanding issue of potholes.

At the meeting, updates on the progress of the road rehabilitation project were provided by the coordinator, Jacob Byamukama. The officials noted the support received from project-affected persons in Makindye Division, enhancing the prospects of increased property values in the area.

Chaired by the Minister for Kampala City and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajjati Minsa Kabanda, the meeting also discussed the construction of a Traffic Control Centre at City Hall, initiated in 2023 with funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This project includes the signalization of 27 junctions city-wide to improve traffic flow.

As part of preparations for the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G77+China summits scheduled for mid-January 2024, KCCA is actively working on 10 roads and two major drainage crossings, with over 75% progress already achieved.

Despite these successes, challenges persist, particularly in managing drainage issues due to encroachments on wetlands and improper waste disposal. Kisaka emphasized the importance of improving drainage systems to prevent floods and urged residents to cooperate by maintaining cleanliness and proper waste disposal.

To expedite the elimination of potholes in 2024, KCCA plans to fast-track road construction works, secure government-sourced funding from development partners, and focus on the city’s Smart City agenda. Kisaka expressed gratitude to the city’s compliant taxpayers for their crucial support and highlighted the ongoing Smart City Ambassadors campaign in schools to instill a sense of patriotism and civic responsibility in the younger generation.
