In recent diplomatic meetings, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations in Uganda, engaged in discussions with Japan’s Ambassador to Uganda, Fukuzawa Hidemoto. The talks took place during a dinner hosted by Ambassador Hidemoto at his official residence in Kampala, where the focus was on strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
During this meeting, General Muhoozi expressed his appreciation to Ambassador Fukuzawa, as well as the Japanese government, for their substantial contributions to Uganda’s development. These contributions encompass various sectors, with a particular emphasis on infrastructural development, agriculture, and support for refugees, highlighting Japan’s substantial investments in Uganda.
Ambassador Fukuzawa, in response, assured General Muhoozi of Japan’s commitment to further enhancing its ties with Uganda. This commitment reflects Japan’s long-standing support for Uganda’s development and infrastructure projects.
One of the notable projects supported by Japan is the construction of the cable-stay bridge in Jinja, which holds the potential to significantly improve regional trade and transportation in the area. Additionally, Japan’s contributions extend to addressing urban challenges, such as traffic congestion and urban transportation in Kampala. This support involves the construction of flyovers at key junctions, an underpass at Nsambya junction, road widening, and traffic safety improvements, all aimed at enhancing urban mobility and accessibility.
In December 2021, the Parliament of Uganda commended the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japanese Government for their invaluable support to the nation. The bridge in Jinja and various urban development projects are just a few examples of Japan’s commitment to Uganda’s progress.
General Muhoozi has been actively engaging with foreign diplomats accredited to Uganda, including Ambassadors from countries such as Cuba, Italy, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Egypt. These diplomatic exchanges underscore Uganda’s commitment to building strong international relations and fostering cooperation with nations across the globe.
