Farmers in Gulu District are set to benefit from farm inputs as part of an initiative to kick-start agricultural activities in the region. According to Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Gulu, Mr. Cosmas James Okidi, an NGO identified as NILE FRESH PRODUCE LTD will soon begin the process of identifying and profiling individual farmers as well as farmer groups who will benefit from seed capital. This capital will be offered in the form of seeds such as soybeans, maize, sunflower, and Macadamia, depending on the number of acres each farmer possesses.
The program primarily focuses on agricultural production, prioritizing agribusiness with the main objective of promoting food security in the community. “I want to take this opportunity to appreciate our partner, NILE FRESH PRODUCE LTD, for their tremendous support to our farmers. As leaders, we must prepare and mobilize our farmers to seize this golden opportunity to enhance productivity,” remarked DRDC Cosmas James Okidi during the closing remarks of an inception meeting held with NILE FRESH PRODUCE LTD on 15th February 2024 at the CAO’s boardroom.
“I also request that a similar meeting be conducted with the sub-county leadership to ensure everyone is on board and their roles in the implementation are clearly defined. Let us embrace coordination, cooperation, and teamwork as the only way to achieve success in this project,” Cosmas further added.
Furthermore, we caution our partner against engaging with seed companies that offer counterfeit seeds to farmers. Proper vetting must be conducted to ensure quality seeds are provided to our farmers.
Under the leadership of His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the government is heavily investing in agriculture as the backbone of the country, which employs over 70% of Ugandans. Initiatives such as PDM, Emyooga, OWC, all focus on large-scale production for commercial purposes. Therefore, it is imperative that we embrace these efforts.
