A severe hailstorm struck Katakwi District on Monday evening, causing widespread destruction and loss of property.
The storm affected several areas, including Toroma Sub County, Amusia Sub County, and Tiroma Town Council, where houses, crops, poultry, and livestock were destroyed.
According to Rashid Olinga, the Local Council Chairman (LC1) of Bobore Village in Toroma Town Council, 73 acres of sesame gardens, 74 cassava gardens, 84 groundnut gardens, 40 sorghum gardens, 30 millet gardens, and 60 mixed groundnut and maize gardens were destroyed.
Olinga also reported significant losses in livestock, with 76 goats and over 400 chickens killed, belonging to beneficiaries of the parish development model in his village of Bobore.
Rashid Olinga expressed deep concern over the villagers’ future livelihoods, foreseeing imminent hunger in these areas.
Hellen Achen, Speaker of Toroma Sub County, confirmed the extensive destruction and personal losses, including chickens recently received from the Vice President.
Meanwhile, Adite Nora, a resident of Morunyang Village, interpreted the hailstorm as a divine warning and called for forgiveness among locals.
