On Friday, September 13, 2024, the Initiative for Better Health-Uganda (IBH), in partnership with the Ministry of Health, launched the Empuumo Marathon 2024 at Kijjungu, opposite Nyamityobora Health Center II in Mbarara City. The official launch unveiled the running kits for the marathon, scheduled for October 27, 2024, and highlighted the theme: “Kick HIV/AIDS Out of South Western Uganda by 2030.”

The launch focused on healthcare services, including HIV/AIDS testing, cancer screening, preventive measures for HIV/AIDS, counseling and guidance for those affected by AIDS, and various other activities.

Impressively, many people, both young and old, actively participated in HIV/AIDS testing and updating their status. It was notable to see a large number of young male adolescents lining up to learn their HIV status, with the number of males who tested surpassing that of females.

With such a high turnout, it is evident that people in South Western Uganda are committed to eradicating HIV/AIDS from the region. As we await the marathon on October 27, 2024, at Kakyeka Stadium, a series of pre-marathon activities will continue across different districts in the Ankole Subregion.

To participate in the marathon, secure your running kit for just 20,000 UGX. Kits are readily available in Mbarara.
