Speaker of Parliament Anita Among visited Kawempe North MP (NUP) Muhammad Ssegirinya at Nsambya Hospital. Ssegirinya’s health had been a concern since his release from prison in February 2023 on charges related to the 2021 killings in Masaka and Lwengo districts.
During the visit on Friday, November 10, 2023, Speaker Among expressed joy over Ssegirinya’s significant recovery, praising his strength and determination during the challenging period. She extended gratitude to the medical team and everyone supporting him.
Ssegirinya, who had spent nearly a year and a half in jail, is currently receiving treatment for reported lung complications. His health became an issue after his release, and he had previously undergone treatment in the Netherlands for skin cancer and lung infections.
Parliament had faced scrutiny over financial support for Ssegirinya’s treatment abroad, with Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa clarifying that proper procedures must be followed. Tayebwa assured that once Ssegirinya’s documents align with Uganda Medical Board requirements, financial assistance would be promptly provided, emphasizing the need for adherence to set guidelines when utilizing public funds.
