Hoima Stadium Construction Hit by Protest Over Unsettled Truck Drivers’ Wages

The Ankole Times

Over ten truck drivers involved in the construction of the $129 million Hoima City Stadium, a key facility for Uganda’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) bid, are protesting alleged non-payment of their wages.

The drivers, who transported marram to the construction site in Kyarwiru Cell, Mparo Ward, say they were recruited from Kasese by Nexius Company, a subcontractor of MS Summa.

They have parked their trucks near Hass Fuel Station at Lottery along Kinubi Road, demanding their dues. The drivers claim they are owed one week’s wages each, at a daily rate of UGX 750,000.

George Nkwasibwe, one of the affected drivers, explained that they were stopped from working two weeks ago and are now struggling to survive in Hoima City.

According to this publication, he also mentioned the difficulty in finding parking for their trucks. Another driver, Alfred Ayebazibwe, said they are facing pressure from their truck owners, who are demanding payment. John Ntegeka appealed to authorities to intervene and ensure they receive their wages.

The drivers transport the marram over a distance of approximately 2.5 kilometers to the construction site.

While calls to Nexius Company director Patrick Aeku went unanswered, Murat Altun, the project manager at MS Summa, stated that all payments due to Nexius were disbursed at the beginning of the week.

The $129 million Hoima City Stadium project is a vital part of Uganda’s preparations for hosting the 2027 AFCON.
