Obongi, Uganda – Agrifarm Uganda Ltd has successfully planted 302 acres of trees in Obongi District under the Development Response to Displacement Impact Project (DRDIP).
Agrifarm is one of the implementing partners identified by the Office of the Prime Minister to implement environmental conservation and irrigation projects in refugee-hosting districts in Uganda.
A group of leaders from Obongi, led by the RDC of Obongi, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, and the Project Manager of Agrifarm Uganda Ltd, Ms. Irene Nakigudde, monitored and supervised the 302 acres planted by Agrifarm Uganda Ltd in Itula and Palornya sub-counties.
The team discovered that the tick trees’ survival rate stands at over 80% despite being burned by wildfires three times.
Ms. Irene Nakigudde, Project Manager of Agrifarm Uganda Ltd, disclosed that the success of the tree planting project lies in transparency and involving local communities in the tree planting process.
Nakigudde disclosed that Agrifarm has supplied free crop seedlings, including simsim (sesame), beans, and sunflower, which are intercropped with the trees as a way of fighting poverty, promoting livelihoods, and protecting the trees from wildfires.
The RDC of Obongi, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, thanked Agrifarm Uganda Ltd for a job well done.
Hashaka disclosed that Agrifarm Uganda Ltd is the only implementing partner in Obongi that has successfully completed most of the projects they were given to implement. He attributed the success to the transparency and accountability exhibited by the organization by adhering to the Presidential directive of ground-breaking and commissioning of completed projects and holding site meetings and joint monitoring during implementation.
The RDC challenged the beneficiaries of the tree planting project by Agrifarm Uganda Ltd to protect the trees against wildfires and to take advantage of the seedlings given to them by Agrifarm Uganda Ltd by planting them.
