The Inspector General of Government, Beti Kamya, has emphasized the need for Ugandans to distinguish between politics and state programs to enhance their livelihoods.
Kamya urged opposition leaders to advocate for their constituents’ involvement in government initiatives, emphasizing that development initiatives are apolitical.
“I encourage everybody to participate in government programs. You cannot seek services from government institutions while simultaneously refusing to engage in government programs,” Kamya stated on Friday.
She expressed concern about individuals who exploit government programs like Emyooga and the Parish Development Model through fraudulent activities.
“As a former opposition member, I embraced government initiatives such as Saccos. I encourage everyone to separate government development programs from politics,” Kamya reiterated during a meeting with Lunda SACCO members in Bulenga, Wakiso District, where she serves as the founder and patron.
Kamya recounted facing criticism from her former political party, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), but emphasized that her focus remained on advocating for her constituents, leading to tangible improvements in their livelihoods.
Highlighting the impact of the Sacco, she noted its role in facilitating education, agriculture, and entrepreneurship among residents of Rubaga Division.
However, Kamya cautioned against reckless borrowing from Saccos, stressing the importance of prudent financial planning to ensure loan repayment.
“People should borrow with clear plans to ensure they can repay the loans. Misuse of borrowed funds jeopardizes the stability of Saccos, which rely on members’ financial discipline,” she cautioned.
Dick Kasolo, the Sacco’s chairperson, lamented the decline in savings culture among Ugandans, emphasizing the importance of responsible borrowing and saving to sustain the institution’s operations.
“These Saccos are built on the principles of savings and credit, but some members prioritize borrowing over saving, leading to financial instability. Members must uphold financial discipline to ensure the sustainability of Saccos,” Kasolo emphasized.
