Leaders and residents in the Lango Sub-region have expressed their satisfaction with the ongoing reconstruction of the Lira-Kamdini road, citing its positive impact on the local economy. Mr. Richard Cox Okello Orik, the Lira District chairperson, acknowledged initial reservations about the project but noted its significance as an economic gateway to the capital city, Kampala, and South Sudan.
The Tororo-Kamdini road project, also known as the North Eastern Road Corridor Asset Management Project (NERAMP), has been assigned to the Portuguese firm Mota-Engil Africa. This 340km road, covering Tororo-Mbale-Soroti-Dokolo-Lira-Kamdini, is financed by the World Bank and operates on an output and performance-based road contracts (OPRC) model.
The reconstruction of the Lira-Kamdini road, or Lot 2B, began in November 2022 and is set for completion in October of the following year. According to Eng Khalil Odong, Unra’s highway engineer for Lot 2 (Soroti-Kamdini), the physical progress currently stands at 27 percent. The road is divided into Lot 2A and Lot 2B, covering Soroti to Lira and Lira to Kamdini, respectively.
While the works are ongoing, there has been a noticeable improvement in the road’s condition, with increased traffic and fewer accidents reported. Leaders and locals are appreciative of the project, acknowledging the challenges they faced due to the road’s poor state in the past.
Some concerns remain about areas yet to be worked on, but stakeholders are encouraged to conclude the major stretches. Residents are thankful for the rehabilitation, as it has reduced accidents and dust pollution in the region.
The project has also had a positive economic impact, with increased business activity along the route. For example, a salon operator in Alidi Trading Centre mentioned a rise in customers since the road’s rehabilitation began. Additionally, members of the community have expressed their happiness with the project, highlighting improvements in healthcare and business operations.
One significant change attributed to the project is the increased traffic on the Lira-Kamdini road, particularly heavy trucks from neighboring countries. Transporters have shifted from the Kampala route to Tororo-Kamdini, which offers a shorter and more accessible path.
In summary, the ongoing reconstruction of the Lira-Kamdini road has garnered support from local leaders and residents, who appreciate its positive impact on the economy, road safety, and business opportunities.
