Geoffrey Omoding, Serere –  Political pressure in Serere is currently at its peak as incumbents are losing sleep, fighting tooth and nail to retain their seats in the upcoming 2026 elections. On Friday, the State Minister for Fisheries, who also serves as the Women Member of Parliament, Mrs. Hellen Adoa Abeku, invited the NRM party registrars and chairpersons, giving them Shs 30 million for transport after their meeting.

Several registrars, who preferred to remain unnamed, told this publication that it is the first time a woman member of parliament has distributed such a large sum to party registrars and chairpersons since her election.

During the meeting at her home in Kakusi, Serere, Ms. Adoa allegedly pleaded for forgiveness for any past mistakes and appealed for their support in the upcoming general elections. However, the chairpersons and registrars assured her that their mandate is to manage the electoral process, while the community ultimately decides who will win.

“For us, we can’t do much because we are not voters. It’s the voters who will cast their votes, and those votes will determine your success,” the registrars reportedly told her.

In the last general elections, Ms. Adoa ran as the sole candidate for Women MP in Serere during the NRM primaries; however, this time, over five women are seriously challenging her. They include Mrs. Esther Achom, Florence Iyogile, Margaret Opol, and Suzan Akello, who are all ready to contest against her.

According to sources in the district, if the State Minister for Fisheries does not double her efforts, it will be challenging for her, as all the women challenging her have proven to be well-resourced and prepared for the competition.
