Over four million residents in Kampala and its surrounding areas are set to experience a 12-hour water shortage on Thursday, December 7, as the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) conducts planned maintenance on two treatment plants in Ggaba. The shutdown, affecting 55% of the central business district and its environs, aims to facilitate routine maintenance works and ensure an ample water supply during the festive season.
Eng. Andrew Muhwezi, senior manager of water production at NWSC, emphasized the importance of customers storing enough water during the shutdown period. The maintenance activities include repairing leakages on transmission lines, planned maintenance of treatment units, inspection of underwater installations, servicing of electro-mechanical equipment, reservoir cleaning, and network interconnection works.
NWSC engineers are committed to completing all planned works within the 12-hour shutdown period. The affected areas include Mulago, Bombo Road, Nansana, Namirembe, Mengo Hill, Makindye, Buziga, Munyonyo, Bunga, Ggaba Road, Kansanga, Nsambya, Jinja Road, Kyambogo, Mbuya, Mutungo, Nakawa, and surrounding regions.
While Ggaba 2 and Ggaba 3 treatment plants will undergo maintenance, Ggaba 1 and Katosi treatment plants will remain fully operational to ensure continued water supply to unaffected areas. NWSC advises residents to make necessary preparations and store sufficient water ahead of the planned shutdown.
