Libino Byamukama, Kigezi – As a way of preserving the environment in the Kigezi sub-region, Kigezi High School in Kabale district has banned the use of plastic bags on school premises.
Addressing journalists in his office, Mr. Abraham Akampurira said they are protecting the environment through this ban. He added that they have noticed an improvement in the school environment and are using school clubs to sensitize the community about the dangers of plastic bags.
He added that the shops around the school have also stopped selling plastic bags due to the school’s ban.
The patron of the Environmental Club at Kigezi High School, Shallon Tumwijukye, and George Turyasima said that the ban on plastic bags has positively impacted the school. They mentioned that the compound used to be dirty, and the noise from crows scavenging for plastic bags in the dustbins has been reduced.
Shallon added that the learners have also saved pocket money by not buying plastic bags.
Members of the Kigezi High School Environmental Club, led by Kukundakwe Mark, Ariho Victorious Suzan, and Ayijuka Susan, said they had been incurring high costs on plastic bags, which are not reusable and harmful to the environment.
They added that students have embraced the initiative throughout the school, and everyone is now using paper bags as a way of preserving the environment.
