Kisoro, Uganda – Residents of Kiraro village, Rwingwe Parish, in the Nyakabande Sub County of Kisoro District, are expressing outrage after allegedly being asked by the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) Kisoro branch to contribute 50 million shillings for the extension of electricity to their area.
The alleged demand was revealed during the village’s end-of-month meeting held over the weekend, where community members gathered to discuss local service delivery and other important matters.
According to residents who were present at the meeting, UEDCL officials reportedly informed them that they would need to raise 50 million shillings to procure essential electrical materials, including wires, a transformer, and electric poles, for the connection to be made.
The reported action by UEDCL has drawn strong condemnation from the Bufumbira East Member of Parliament, Dr. James Nsababuturo. Dr. Nsababuturo pledged to intervene in the situation to ensure that the residents of Kiraro village gain access to electricity.
As of press time, attempts to obtain a comment from UEDCL officials in Kisoro District regarding the allegations were unsuccessful.
