Police in Kisoro District have cautioned parents against using child labor in their businesses, warning that such practices negatively impact their children’s futures, leading to lives of hardship.

The comments were made by Community Liaison Officer, Kisoro District, IP Arinaitwe Boaz, during a brief discussion with journalists as the world prepares to celebrate Children’s Day on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.

This year’s theme for Uganda’s commemoration, which will be held at Golf Course Hotel in Kampala, is “Empowering Children in Uganda Through Technology and Design.”

Speaking to journalists, Afande Boaz condemned the use of child labor, highlighting the physical injuries and long-term harm it causes to young children. He urged parents to take full responsibility for their children’s well-being and refrain from such practices.

Afande Arinaitwe further advised parents to closely monitor their children during holidays and festive seasons. He emphasized the importance of regulating children’s exposure to digital content, which can have negative moral effects. Instead, he encouraged parents to spend quality time with their children, engaging in conversations that would contribute to raising them responsibly.

Meanwhile, speaking to Catherine Ntabade, Communications Specialist at UNICEF, she highlighted that World Children’s Day on November 20 marks the anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It is a global call to action for schools, communities, and institutions to engage with and support children.

Catherine noted that UNICEF encourages the world to actively listen to children’s hopes, dreams, and visions for the future.

Promoting children’s right to participation, she emphasized that children should be empowered to voice their opinions about the world they want to live in. It is everyone’s responsibility to listen and support their visions.
