Kisoro Residents Concerned Over Unsanitary Hotel Practices

Residents in Kisoro Municipality have expressed dissatisfaction over a section of hotel operators who use velondors and other open-air spaces as their kitchen areas, which can lead to the easy spread of diseases to customers.

While speaking to the media, residents revealed that many hotels operating along the streets in Kisoro Municipality are preparing food in velondors and other open spaces where food is exposed to air, germs, bacteria, dust, and other contaminants, which can lead to bacterial, viral, or fungal growth.

Residents further noted that exposure to light, heat, or oxygen can degrade vitamins and minerals and cause spoilage, rancidity, and discoloration. They called upon authorities to intervene in the situation.

Meanwhile, the district health inspector, Akar Moses, encouraged hotel operators to embrace the Food Safety Acts and Regulations to address the problem, as it is putting the lives of customers at risk.

Similarly, Akar urged hotel operators to construct kitchens and handle them safely, which retains nutrients like protein, vitamins, minerals, enhances the bioavailability of nutrients, and supports healthy digestion.

He further called upon town dwellers to manage their garbage instead of using the issue of paying licensing fees as a concern that is parallel with garbage collection.
