Kisoro, Uganda — Women in Kisoro District have been encouraged to stand up for their rights as a way to address the increasing cases of domestic violence affecting families.
The call was made yesterday during the official opening of a three-day workshop focused on gender-based violence and women’s rights, held at Nyakabande Subcounty headquarters.
The workshop brings together women from various subcounties across Kisoro and is facilitated by the Eastern and Southern Africa Small-Scale Farmers Forum (ESAFF) Uganda, in partnership with La Via Campesina.
Rashida Kabanda, the coordinator of ESAFF Uganda, said the workshop mainly targets young women, noting they are often quick to learn and can easily share knowledge with their peers.
Lydia Mugisha, Chairperson of the Kisoro District Women Council, commended ESAFF Uganda for supporting women in the district. She noted that many women remain unaware of their rights, and such initiatives are essential in empowering them.
Several participants expressed gratitude for the training, saying they had learned valuable lessons and were ready to apply them in their daily lives.
Ntawera Funi Evary, the LCIII Chairperson of Nyakabande Subcounty, welcomed the initiative, emphasizing that it will help strengthen families in the district, many of which are facing challenges due to domestic violence.
