The Lango War Claimants’ Association, in conjunction with Obua Akello and Co. Advocates, has united to pursue compensation funds from the Ugandan government, with their leaders stressing the importance of unity among claimants.
During a press briefing held jointly by the two teams at Pacific Grand Hotel in Lira City on Friday afternoon, Ogwang Moses Adonyo and Obua Sam emphasized unity as a key factor for the successful realization of compensation.
Ogwang Adonyo, now the Regional Coordinator of the Lango War Claimants’ Association, expressed satisfaction and urged all Lango members to embrace unity to ensure the process is successful. He stated that they have received empowerment from the Office of the Attorney General and the Office of the President to unify as a single team to claim their rightful compensation.
Moses appealed to all claimants to ensure that beneficiaries receive accurate payments based on the number of animals lost during the 1986 war. He mentioned that despite a letter from the Attorney General on April 9, 2024, directing the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to finalize 49,414 data cards, the process has not been completed to date.
During the same press briefing at Pacific Grand Hotel, Ogwang Moses Adonyo, Regional Coordinator of the Lango War Claimants’ Association, and Obua Sam, also known as “Obua-Dok Ka-Langi,” from Obua & Akello Co. Advocates, underscored the urgent need for unity. They announced that coordinators from across the Lango sub-region have been appointed to represent all districts in coordinating the compensation process.
Obua Dok Ka-Langi mentioned a historical frustration in 2014 due to delayed payments, noting that Lawyer Basaas Alex had crucial data. He added that Lawyer Simon Peter Odoo has now been assigned as the main counsel to handle the cattle compensation case. Recently, the government allocated 80 billion UGX for compensation, which is being disbursed in phases.
