Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), responded to the recently circulated electoral programme for the 2023 administrative units and women council elections. Byabakama emphasized that the EC has not issued the mentioned electoral programme. He clarified that the leaked program is an internal working document intended for discussion and has not been approved.

The leaked program, which some individuals and media outlets claim to be the official electoral programme for Local Council I and II elections, is, in fact, a prototype document for internal deliberations regarding the proposed timelines for these elections.

Byabakama encouraged political parties, prospective candidates, their supporters, and all stakeholders to disregard the leaked document and await the official approval and release of the electoral program by the Electoral Commission.

It’s worth noting that in July, the cabinet extended the term of office for Local Council I and II leaders by an additional six months due to a lack of funds for organizing their elections. These six months are nearing their end.
