The Mr. Uganda pageant was launched last week at Motiv in the Industrial Area in an effort to reshape Uganda’s pageantry scene. This new competition aims to spotlight and nurture young men in Uganda, inspired by the success of its female counterpart, Miss Uganda.

Brenda Nanyonyo, CEO of Miss Uganda, explained that the idea for the pageant came from a recent Miss World license meeting, where they were encouraged to send male representatives. “I mentor many boys, and I believe this is something they would love, cherish, and be part of,” she said.

This pageant is not about finding the most muscular man in Kampala; it addresses a range of challenges facing young men today, such as the lack of positive role models and the need for better personal grooming and hygiene. Nanyonyo expressed concern over behaviors where young men, instead of becoming responsible adults, are “eyeing older women” and avoiding work. This behavior contributes to a rise in single mothers due to poorly mentored young men.

The launch of Mr. Uganda comes at a time when there is a clear disparity in mentorship and role models between young men and women. While young girls have numerous role models and support systems, boys have been largely neglected in this area. “The young girls that we groom and mentor would also love to get married to a good, responsible man with status,” Nanyonyo said, emphasizing the broader societal benefits of this initiative.

Participants in the Mr. Uganda pageant will undergo a boot camp where issues such as personal grooming and hygiene will be addressed. “This is crucial in fostering well-rounded, responsible men who can act as role models for future generations,” said Nanyonyo during the launch.

To qualify for Mr. Uganda, applicants must be between 20-26 years old, possess a national ID and a valid passport, be single, and not have children. They must be at least six feet in height.

Criteria Requirements
Age 20-26 years

Marital Status Single, no children
Height Minimum of six feet

Registration for Mr. Uganda is ongoing and ends on July 30, 2024. The winner will also represent Uganda at this year’s Mr. World pageant, which has been running for 12 years and crowns a new titleholder every two years.
