In-Depth Details

Government and private sector representatives gathered at the Directorate of Ethics and Integrity on October 18th to plan for the 8th Nyege Nyege festival, a cultural event scheduled for November 9th to 12th in Jinja City. Chaired by Hon. Rose Lilly Akello, the Minister of State for Ethics and Integrity, the meeting aimed to review the previous year’s festival, with a specific emphasis on security and ethical aspects.

Notable attendees included officials from the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, Uganda Police, Busoga Kingdom, and Uganda Breweries Limited. The Nyege Nyege festival provides numerous business opportunities for entrepreneurs and service providers, with a wide range of benefits for the local community.

Festival Venue and Local Opportunities

The festival is set to cover approximately 50 acres of land, including iconic locations like the Source of the Nile, Jinja Showgrounds, Jinja Golf Course, and Source Gardens in Jinja City. This extensive area creates various opportunities for businesses and service providers.

One such opportunity is in accommodation, as the influx of festival attendees generates a high demand for lodging. Hotels and guesthouses can capitalize on this by providing accommodations to visitors. Furthermore, the festival creates employment opportunities for locals, both directly and indirectly. Some roles include parking attendants, accredited guides, transport services (Boda Bodas and car hire), and suppliers of both raw and cooked food, among others.

The previous year’s festival saw an estimated attendance of nearly 15,000 people, consisting of both local and international participants. The collaborative efforts of government and the private sector aim to make this year’s Nyege Nyege festival an even greater success.
