Lightning Kills Pupil, Injures Eight at Kyabasara Primary School in Kagadi

KAGADI | UGANDA — A lightning strike during a heavy downpour at Kyabasara Primary School in Pachwa Sub-county, Kagadi District, left one pupil dead and eight others injured on Thursday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Mary Atugonza, a Primary Seven pupil, who died instantly as pupils attended evening lessons.




Eyewitnesses reported that the storm developed suddenly, catching both teachers and learners off guard. The lightning bolt hit the school compound with tremendous force, causing panic among pupils and staff.




The injured students were quickly rushed to Kyabasara Health Centre III, where they are currently receiving treatment for injuries including burns and shock.




Everest Mujobe, the school’s security guard, described the terrifying moment:

“We heard a loud thunderstorm after a bolt of lightning struck. One child died on the spot, while the others were quickly taken to Kyabasara Health Centre III,” he said.

At the health facility, some of the survivors expressed deep shock but also gratitude for having survived. Medical personnel continue to monitor their recovery.

Local authorities have taken note of the incident. Bangirana Benon, the LC1 Chairperson of the area, confirmed the event and said that police had been informed:




“It’s true, one child died instantly while eight others were rushed to the health centre. Police have been notified and are handling the case,” said Bangirana Benon, the LC1 Chairperson.
