Amolatar, Uganda : Joan Ayikoru, the Lira Regional Officer in charge of the Inspectorate of Government (IGG), has urged the community in Amolatar district to actively participate in the fight against corruption, which is prevalent in the area. Ayikoru emphasized the crucial role of the community in combating corruption and monitoring government projects, urging residents to promptly report any instances of corruption in various offices within their locality.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement meeting with Community Monitoring Groups (CMGs) in Agikdak sub-county, Amolatar district, on Wednesday, Ayikoru underscored the importance of the community monitoring groups, selected and elected by community members, in ensuring the effectiveness and implementation of projects like NUSAF.
Ayikoru further tasked the community monitoring groups with monitoring various government projects in their area, such as PDM, UWEP, YLP, among others. Tommy Okucu, a leader of Alobokwe parish, commended the Inspectorate of Government (IG) for organizing an interactive engagement meeting focused on monitoring government projects, especially involving the residents of Amolatar district. Okucu expressed confidence that the knowledge gained from the training would empower them to monitor different government projects effectively and combat corruption in their area.
Ambrose Adilo, who leads Abarikori parish and Awonangira parish respectively, rallied the community to cooperate with the IG to eradicate corruption in their areas, citing its detrimental impact on the country’s development.
A 45-year-old woman, who chose to remain anonymous, acknowledged the Inspectorate of Government’s efforts to combat corruption in Amolatar district, urging everyone to join hands and collaborate with the IGG to eliminate corruption not only in Amolatar but also in the entire Lango sub-region.
In contrast, a 50-year-old man from Abarikori Parish commended Joan Ayikoru for her commendable work in adopting a bottom-up approach by involving Community Monitoring Groups (CMGs) at the grassroots level.
It’s important to note that the Inspectorate of Government (IG) operates according to the constitution of the Republic of Uganda and is headed by the Inspector General of Government (IGG). Its functions include investigating cases of corruption, enforcing leadership codes of conduct, and promoting good governance and accountability in public offices.
