Liverpool legend Steve McManaman is scheduled to make an appearance at the upcoming 6th edition of the Standard Chartered Cup, a popular futsal tournament taking place at Lugogo Phillip Omondi Stadium on October 7, 2023.
The 2023 Standard Chartered Cup is an international 5-a-side football tournament that not only promises an exhilarating futsal experience for Ugandan football enthusiasts but also offers a unique opportunity to attend an English Premier League match in the UK. Participants will have the privilege of benefiting from a professional training session at the Liverpool FC academy, along with an exclusive match viewing session of a selected Premier League game involving Liverpool.
Margaret Kigozi Namulindwa, Head of Corporate Affairs, Brand, and Marketing, announced the tournament’s details during a press conference held at the bank’s headquarters on Speke Road. The bank has invited 40 corporate teams, primarily their customers, to register for the tournament on a first-come, first-served basis, completely free of charge.
The participating teams will compete at Lugogo on September 7, with the winning team earning the opportunity to travel to the UK. Standard Chartered will cover all expenses for a team of five players and two officials. This marks the tournament’s sixth installment in Uganda, having enjoyed successful launches from 2015 to 2019 before being temporarily halted due to the pandemic.
Speaking at the press conference, Acting CEO of Standard Chartered, Kelvin Musana, highlighted the partnership between the global bank and Liverpool FC, emphasizing their joint efforts to create and deliver unique experiences worldwide.
Margaret Kigozi added, “In the spirit of fairness and to provide opportunities for different teams, we’ve decided that if a team has previously won the tournament and traveled to the UK, they will not be eligible to participate, even if they win again.”
Edgars Youth Programme, which has been involved in managing the SC Cup futsal tournament since its inception in 2015, will oversee the technical aspects of the event.
To ensure fairness and professionalism, player verification will be carried out to ensure that no professionals from the Super and Big Leagues participate. The registration deadline is set for September 29, with the draws scheduled for October 4.
