The Commander-in-Chief, Yoweri Museveni, has appointed Maj Gen Moses Rwakitarate to lead the committee tasked with establishing a museum for the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
Maj Gen Rwakitarate takes over from Maj Gen Henry Matsiko, who previously chaired the Implementation Committee for the Uganda National Military Museum. Maj Gen Jack Bakasumba, UPDF’s Chief of Joint Staff, highlighted that the military museum will showcase the history of the country’s defence forces.
“The museum will not only preserve our country’s history but also serve as a source of revenue through tourism,” Maj Gen Bakasumba emphasized. UPDF has committed full support to Maj Gen Rwakitarate, expecting a museum of high international standards.
Maj Gen Matsiko reported significant progress in the project and expressed optimism that the museum will chronicle the force’s history from colonial times through independence, post-independence, and the 40 years of UPDF under NRM.
“The museum’s strategic location along the Masaka-Kampala Highway in Katonga holds historical significance due to its association with Uganda’s liberation battles,” Maj Gen Matsiko noted.
Maj Gen Rwakitarate commended the project’s initiators, particularly the late Lt Gen Pecos Kutesa, and pledged to uphold the responsibility for enhancing the museum. “I urge all UPDF members to actively support this project for its success,” Maj Gen Rwakitarate affirmed.
While UPDF is developing its museum, the Uganda Police Force (UPF) has already established one at the CID headquarters in Kibuli, Makindye Division, Kampala Capital City.
