The Ministry of Health has launched an initiative to enhance the corporate image of public health facilities. As part of this effort, the Ministry’s Communication and Public Relations Unit, led by Mr. Emmanuel Ainebyoona, is engaging with key personnel at regional referral hospitals to improve their communication strategies.
Following a productive visit to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital (KRRH), the team was impressed by the hospital’s organized notice board, which effectively displayed internal communications with clear deadlines. Ainebyoona attributed this to the 5S methodology, a Japanese approach to reducing waste and optimizing productivity through an orderly workplace.
The team then proceeded to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH), a premier healthcare institution and teaching center of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST). Notably, MRRH serves a vast catchment area, including the Ankole region, neighboring countries, and refugee populations, offering specialized services to a diverse patient base.
During a meeting with MRRH’s administration, including Dr. Francis Oriokot, Deputy Director and Senior Consultant Pediatrics and Child Health, Mr. Ojom Francis, Senior Hospital Administrator, and Public Relations Officer Halson Kagure, discussions focused on enhancing communication and reputation management.
Dr. Oriokot emphasized the importance of effective crisis communication and the hospital’s swift response to public concerns. He also acknowledged the MRRH’s Public Relations Officer’s role in cultivating positive media relations and ensuring timely information dissemination.
Kagure explained that the hospital utilizes both traditional and modern platforms for audience communication, including notice boards and digital channels. He noted, however, that website downtime due to internet connectivity issues is being addressed.
Ainebyoona recommended proactively sharing health-related information and updates across digital platforms to improve public understanding. He commended MRRH for its reputation management and encouraged the administration to leverage available media to connect with the public. He also pledged the Ministry’s support in amplifying the hospital’s achievements and developments.
All referral hospitals in the country will benefit from the team’s visits, which aim to gather insights into healthcare services, milestones, and challenges. Ultimately, this information will support dedicated units in developing effective public communication materials.
