Kampala, Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni’s recent appointment of Edrisa Musuuza, popularly known as Eddy Kenzo, who is also the reigning president of the Uganda Musicians Federation (UMF), as the Presidential Advisor on Creatives has stirred a wave of mixed reactions among Ugandans.

The announcement, made yesterday, has left the nation divided, with some praising the celebrated musician’s remarkable journey from humble beginnings, while others question his qualifications for such a prestigious role.

Eddy Kenzo, a senior two dropout, has defied the odds to become one of Uganda’s most recognized musical talents. Rising to fame between 2007 and 2009, Kenzo gained popularity with songs like “Yanimba,” a collaboration with Michael Wine, the younger brother of renowned musician and politician Bobi Wine. Both artists were under the mentorship of Bobi Wine as part of the “Fire Base Crew.” However, it was the release of his blockbuster hit “Stamina” that catapulted Kenzo into the limelight, setting the stage for his continued success in the music industry.

Kenzo’s achievements are noteworthy. In 2015, he became the first and only Ugandan artist to win a BET Award with his hit single “Sitya Loss,” a milestone that further solidified his status as a leading figure in Ugandan music. This achievement stood in contrast to several other Ugandan artists, including the celebrated duo Radio and Weasel, who, despite numerous nominations, never secured a win.

However, Kenzo’s appointment has not been without controversy. Many have pointed to his apparent shift in political allegiance as a point of contention. Once a staunch supporter of Honourable Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, Kenzo has been accused of turning his back on his former mentor after meeting with President Museveni.

This shift has fueled speculation that Kenzo may have been influenced or even bribed by the state, with his new advisory role seen by some as confirmation of these allegations.

Adding to the intrigue, Kenzo recently made headlines for his romantic involvement with State Minister for Minerals, Honourable Phiona Nyamutoro. This comes after his highly publicized split with fellow musician Rema Namakula, who left him for Dr. Hamza Ssebunya. Kenzo’s relationship with Nyamutoro, including a secret visit to her parents, has further fueled public interest in his personal life.

Despite the controversies, Eddy Kenzo’s life story remains an inspiration to many, particularly the youth in Uganda’s ghettos. His rise from poverty to fame and now to a position of influence in the government embodies the phrase “from grass to grace.” Whether his new role will be met with success or skepticism remains to be seen, but there is no doubt that Eddy Kenzo’s journey continues to captivate the nation.
