Besigye’s Life at Risk: Court Sends Opposition Leader Back to Prison Amid Protests

Dr. Kizza Besigye’s health took center stage in his ongoing detention case after Judge Singizi Douglas ordered the opposition leader’s return to prison due to his deteriorating condition.

The judge expressed concern over Besigye’s health, explaining that he could not proceed with a sick prisoner who might faint in court.

“This is an administrative order. If a prisoner is sick, I can’t continue with him. He might faint,” Judge Singizi ruled before adjourning the session briefly.

Besigye, who has been on a hunger strike for several days to protest his detention, has reportedly suffered significant health complications. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, previously disclosed that his kidneys were showing signs of damage.

His declining health has sparked nationwide protests, with supporters in Mbarara, Bushenyi, and Kampala calling for his release.

Despite these developments, the state has continued to hold Besigye in detention, prompting his lawyers to file for an immediate release order.

The court is set to reconvene soon to hear the defense team’s plea for his freedom.

Tensions remain high as security forces maintain a heavy presence around the court, anticipating potential protests from Besigye’s supporters.

His legal team argues that continued incarceration without proper medical care violates his rights and is pushing for a swift ruling in his favor.

As the case unfolds, the fate of one of Uganda’s most prominent opposition figures is closely watched, with activists and human rights organizations hoping for a fair and just outcome.
