The Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba shared thoughts in now-deleted tweets calling for the repeal of the Anti-Homosexuality Law (AHA) established in 2023. Muhoozi mentioned that during a recent visit to Japan, he was questioned about Uganda’s treatment of homosexuals.

He expressed that he was deeply shocked and hurt by this inquiry. In his view, the Japanese are warriors similar to Ugandans, whom he holds in high regard.

He reportedly asked the Japanese individual who posed the question how they were mistreating homosexuals in Uganda, and was informed about the AHA Law. He subsequently encouraged his supporters to advocate for the removal of this ‘small law,’ asserting that Uganda’s international friends are misinterpreting the nation’s stance.

“I visited Japan recently and people inquired why we are treating homosexuals poorly? I was completely taken aback and felt very hurt. The Japanese are warriors just like us. I hold them in high esteem. I asked them how we are harming them?

Then they told me about the AHA.

Fellow countrymen, let’s abolish that small law.

Our global friends are misreading us,” the tweets that have since been deleted stated.

The General, nevertheless, encountered criticism and backlash even from his own supporters. His most ardent supporter, Balaam Barugahara, noted that he sadly concurs with his superior.

He further urged parents to emphasize that only heterosexual relationships are deemed acceptable and normal in the country. Yet, Balaam also partially aligned with his ‘Supreme Leader’ by stating that this law has damaged Uganda’s reputation internationally.

Ultimately, Balaam, who serves as the State Minister for Youths, concluded that this law should be revoked to uphold human rights that embrace inclusivity regardless of an individual’s sexual orientation.

It’s important to note that Uganda faced significant backlash from the global community when this law was enacted. Sanctions were imposed on both individuals and the nation as a response to what was labeled a barbaric law. Nevertheless, Uganda also received considerable recognition internationally for resisting external pressure.
