Kampala authorities have stepped up security patrols in the Central Business District following a surge in violent attacks linked to kifeesi gang groups. The gangs, made up mostly of youths aged between 18 and 25, have been ambushing pedestrians, punching them, and stealing phones, handbags, and wallets.

Several hotspots have been identified, including the New and Old Taxi Parks, Nabugabo Road, Kisenyi, Clock Tower, Johnson Street, and William Street. These areas are often crowded, making it easier for the attackers to disappear into the masses after striking.

Police say the gangs mainly target vulnerable people such as women, the elderly, and pedestrians walking alone, especially during peak hours. An officer attached to Nakivubo Police Post, who preferred not to be named, revealed that some assailants hide iron knuckles or small metal objects in their hands. In several cases, victims are knocked unconscious before they even realize they are being robbed.

With the festive season approaching, security agencies have intensified both uniformed and undercover deployments. Police have also urged members of the public to stay alert, avoid isolated routes, and keep their valuables out of sight while navigating crowded areas.

“We are increasing foot and motorized patrols, especially in hotspot zones. We want everyone to enjoy the holiday season safely,” a security source said.

Authorities are encouraging the public to report suspicious groups or individuals immediately, as efforts to dismantle the kifeesi networks continue.
