Kasambya County MP Daudi Kabanda has shaken up Uganda’s political scene by calling Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba a “standby generator,” poised to take charge if President Museveni steps down. Kabanda likened Gen. Muhoozi to a backup power source, ready to lead should Museveni decide it’s time to pass the torch.

This bold statement has rekindled debates around the “Muhoozi Project,” a movement pushing for Gen. Muhoozi, Museveni’s son, as the next potential leader. With Museveni in power since 1986, Uganda is gearing up for the 2026 elections, and the future of leadership is a hot topic.

Gen. Muhoozi, a high-ranking officer in Uganda’s army, frequently stirs discussions with his outspoken posts on social media, fueling his growing political presence. But as the saying goes, “Not everyone who stands in the sun seeks warmth.” Some Ugandans see his ascent as a source of stability; others fear it’s a step toward a family dynasty.

Critics, including opposition leader Bobi Wine, argue that Uganda’s leadership should come from the people, not one family. They believe the country’s future shouldn’t rely on bloodlines alone. Supporters, however, argue that Muhoozi’s rise could keep Uganda steady, avoiding the upheaval that sudden political changes might bring.

Kabanda’s words have certainly fueled speculation, but Gen. Muhoozi himself has yet to announce any formal intentions to run. For now, all eyes are on Uganda’s political landscape, waiting to see if this “standby generator” will indeed be switched on, or if another leader will step forward to guide the nation.
