A heist at Bank of Uganda has left the country in shock after UGX 62 billion vanished from the country’s central bank.
The money is said to have been stolen through a hacking incident, according to reports from BoU, but not everyone is convinced by the explanation. Maurice Kibalya, the MP for Bugabula South, is among those who believe the truth is being hidden.
Speaking at a recent training session for Members of Parliament organized by SEATINI Uganda and the Tax Justice Network Africa, Kibalya questioned how such a large sum could disappear from the country’s most secure institution. “When the hen cackles, the egg is never far behind,” Kibalya said, suggesting that something is wrong with the official story.
He strongly rejected the idea that the theft was the result of hacking. “The Central Bank has the strongest safety measures in place. So how could this happen? The story of hacking doesn’t add up,” he argued.
Kibalya further accused the government of playing games with the people’s money, accusing top officials of being involved in the theft. He questioned why such incidents always seem to happen in government institutions. “You cannot hide an elephant under a small mat,” he said, implying that there’s a deeper conspiracy at play.
According to Kibalya, the theft could not have happened without the involvement of high-ranking officials in the Finance Ministry and Bank of Uganda.
Kibalya’s words are a call for transparency and accountability. “If money can disappear from the Central Bank, what about the foreign reserves? What are they hiding from us?” he asked.
His accusations have raised more questions than answers, with many now wondering if the government is being fully honest about what happened to the missing funds.
