President Yoweri Museveni has commended the security forces and the public for thwarting a planned demonstration on Tuesday. He described the planned protest as having two harmful components: foreign funding and a plot to undermine the country.

Museveni accused unnamed foreign entities of attempting to interfere in Uganda’s internal affairs, a pattern he claims has persisted for centuries. He emphasized Uganda’s sovereignty and rejected any form of neo-colonialism.

The President also alleged that some organizers of the demonstration harbored malicious intentions towards the Ugandan people, the details of which would be revealed during legal proceedings. He acknowledged that not all participants were aware of the full extent of the plot.

Museveni differentiated between legitimate, peaceful protests and the planned demonstration, offering to participate in a well-organized, anti-corruption march. He referenced a previous march organized by State House Anti-Corruption Unit head, Beti Olive Kamya, and suggested a similar event on a Sunday.

The President warned those receiving foreign funding to desist and report such activities to the Minister of State for Ethics. He emphasized the government’s knowledge of these groups and its determination to protect Uganda from external influence.

Museveni attributed the relatively mild police response to the demonstration to a lack of complete information about the organizers’ intentions. He assured the public that the government possesses more comprehensive intelligence on the matter.

The President reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption, particularly within the government’s accounting system. He concluded by expressing gratitude for the peaceful outcome of the situation.
