Even though it may not be at an all-time high, Uganda is facing a potential disaster due to rising tribal tensions, and many believe that if not addressed early, it could escalate.

This was highlighted in a social media video where a man expressed gratitude to his daughter for avoiding marriage to a Muganda man.

Immediately after this video surfaced online, reactions poured in with a flurry of opinions and accusations. Many internet users began to invoke tribalism, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention.

It’s important to recognize that Uganda is home to numerous tribes. Nevertheless, certain tribes, particularly the Baganda and Banyankore, have established themselves as dominant, leading others to perceive feelings of marginalization.

Among these so-called dominant tribes, competition exists for who should wield more influence.

“They embody tribalism, and that’s just who they are. They are tribalistic by nature and upbringing. It is simply a fact,” remarked a netizen concerning the video.

“The Banyankole are inherently tribalistic. I wanted to marry a Muganda girl, but my entire clan opposed it vehemently. I decided to distance myself from them and am now marrying the woman I love,” another user shared about his personal experiences.

“I believe we are overreacting to a clansman’s joke. Tribalism is a serious accusation. The elder was simply making a humorous remark that could be heard at any regular family gathering,” commented lawyer Isaac Mpanga regarding the matter.

It appears that many have been counseled to marry within their own cultures to prevent such cultural conflicts. Given the country’s diversity, this means that various cultures exist, and what may be acceptable in one could be taboo in another. Furthermore, limited exposure contributes to these views.

However, in reality, the situation seems quite different as there have been numerous intermarriages among Ugandans. In fact, finding someone of pure ethnic lineage is quite challenging due to the extensive intermarrying that has occurred.
