Winnie Byanyima, the Executive Director of UNAIDS and wife of veteran politician Dr. Col. Kiiza Besigye, has expressed concern over the duration of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s controversial tweeting behavior. The General, who also serves as the Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), has gained notoriety for his provocative posts on social media.

This time, among his tweets, he suggested capturing Sudan with assistance from the US president-elect, Donald Trump. In now-deleted posts, the First Son claimed the presence of white mercenaries in Sudan and expressed intentions to take control of Khartoum and eliminate them.

These remarks were met with strong disapproval from the Sudanese government, which is currently embroiled in a power struggle between two warring factions. They issued a statement demanding an apology from Uganda and urged the United Nations and African Union to pay close attention to this situation, describing it as a threat to a sovereign nation.

“Threats of war, breaches of national sovereignty, and violations of the United Nations Charter, along with the African Union’s Constitutive Act and international law, are far too significant to be trivialized or used for attention-seeking or sensational purposes.

The Sudanese government, therefore, seeks an official apology from Uganda for these reckless and dangerous comments. It also calls upon the African Union, regional and international bodies, and the global community to denounce these statements, which threaten regional and international peace and security and disrespect the dignity of Africans,” part of the Sudanese government statement read.

In response to this scenario, Winnie Byanyima shared the statement and remarked, “For how long must this continue?”

Byanyima’s comment, however, drew significant attention, particularly from Uganda’s representative and ambassador to the United Nations, Adonia Ayebare. He advised the highly educated and traveled Byanyima to refrain from discussing local and international political matters, citing her role as an international civil servant.

“My sister, you are an international civil servant; please refrain from commenting on national and regional politics,” Adonia stated.

Nonetheless, Winnie firmly maintained that she would exercise her rights as a Ugandan and suggested that the First Son has been unpredictable in his social media activities over the past few years.
