Oyam, Uganda – The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Hon. Betty Amongi Akena, has urged the people of Myene Sub-county in Oyam South Constituency to send girls to school so that another Amongi Betty can emerge to help humanity.
Addressing hundreds of people in an emotional plea, Betty Amongi said her father, who was a teacher, amidst poverty, struggled and paid school fees for all his children without discriminating against girls. “I thank you for the love and trust you rendered to me and appeal to you, if you want to honor my legacy, please send girls to school, to give them equal opportunities with boys.”
She articulated her achievements in the Sub-county, stating the biggest achievement she is proud of was to lobby for a pilot project which constructed an electric fence on the boundary between the communities and the national park, stopping wildlife from straying to the communities, which had resulted in the killing of several people. Minister Betty elaborated on her work in rehabilitating several roads like the road linking Acimi to Nwoya district, Teopobo, among others.
