Police in Mitooma District are investigating the death of a 32-year-old man who was lynched by a mob on January 16, 2024. The incident occurred in Bitooma 2 Cell, Bitooma Parish, Katenga Sub-county, Mitooma District, at approximately 6:30 PM.
The victim, identified as Frank Kijana, was a casual worker residing in the area. He was suspected of stealing cattle and two goats, and was reportedly tracked by a police sniffer dog. However, Kijana managed to evade arrest when confronted by police officers.
According to Jackson Kashaija, a 79-year-old who reported the case to the police, Kijana reappeared in the area later that day and was subsequently attacked and killed by a mob.
Police spokesperson Marcial Tumusiime confirmed the incident and said that Kijana’s body exhibited multiple injuries, including a cut on the forehead. The body has been transported to Kitagata Hospital in Sheema District for a postmortem examination.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances leading to the lynching and to identify those involved in the violent act.
