Residents of Mpundu Village in Chahafi Town Council, Murora Sub County, are urging the local government of Kisoro District to take immediate action against individuals diverting the water channel from Kaguri Swamp to their gardens and schools.
The concerns arose after some residents began redirecting the water flow in various directions, including towards Chibumba Primary School.
Benon Agakoba, the Chairperson of Mpundu Village, explained that their community initially received guidance from environmental officials on managing the water channel. However, some residents have now taken to diverting the water to their homes, the school, and their crops. He expressed fear of an impending famine if the situation persists.
Edson Sabit, Chairperson of the Water Conservation Group in Chahafi Town Council, highlighted the community’s past struggles with flooding from the swamp. He explained their efforts to control the water flow and prevent it from damaging Chibumba Primary School and other properties. However, some residents continue to divert the water, posing a threat to the school and private properties. He called upon the district authorities to intervene and avert a potential crisis.
Baker Hagena, a member of the United Farmers and Nature Conservation Group, expressed concern about the deliberate diversion of water flow to other people’s properties. He urged the district authorities to intervene and address the situation before it escalates.
Residents who recently renovated the water channel to ensure a stable supply were dismayed to discover the unauthorized diversions, particularly to Chibumba Primary School. They appealed to the government for intervention to prevent potential conflicts within the village.
In response, Officer in Charge Nassan Sula of Mulora Police Post advised Mpundu Village residents to seek assistance from Kisoro District local authorities for a peaceful and lasting resolution. He urged them to avoid resorting to conflict within the community.
