A squad of 14 players from the National Golf team has entered a training camp in preparation for the upcoming Victoria Cup, a two-nation golf competition hosted by Uganda. The event, taking place from February 1 to 3 at Kitante, offers Uganda the chance to reclaim the Victoria Cup, last won in 2019 at the same venue.
The players, under the guidance of National team coach Flavia Namakula, will undergo qualifiers from January 22 to 25. The top four players selected from the shortlist of ten will represent Uganda against Kenya in the prestigious golf tournament. Notably, Godfrey Nsubuga is absent from the camp as he recently left for college in the United States.
The selected players for the camp include Joseph Cwinya-ai, Ibrahim Bagalana, Morris Ashaba, Michael Tumusiime, John Musimenta, Reagan Akena, Andrew Ssekibejja, Amon Bwambale, Titus Okwong, and Joseph Kasozi. The training camp also includes junior players Brian Mugabe, Elton Thembo, Cosmos Ociti, and Ibrahim Ssemakula, who will compete for spots not only on the senior team but also in the junior team for events like the All Africa Junior Golf Championship.
Uganda, having won the Victoria Cup once at home in 2019 out of five attempts, aims to put up a strong performance against Kenya. In 2022, they faced a 21–5 defeat at the Limuru Golf Club. Kenya, having won the first three editions, is also eager to secure their second title on Ugandan soil.
